Spa confirmed that Mercedes still owns the strongest 2026 baseline, but Budapest usually compresses the field and rewards clean traction,
front-row track position and tire control. Antonelli arrives with 204 points and six wins, Ferrari has the sharper immediate chase package,
and McLaren now badly needs a tidy weekend instead of another near-miss.
Pole Favorite
Antonelli still gets the pole edge, but by less than at Spa
Antonelli has just converted Spa into both pole and victory, and Mercedes still has the cleanest one-lap execution of the front-runners.
Hungaroring usually punishes small balance errors, so Ferrari's sharper low-speed rotation keeps Leclerc close enough to threaten the front row immediately.
Norris still has qualifying pace, but McLaren now needs a cleaner weekend after wasting too much raw speed across recent rounds.
Grand Prix Favorite
Antonelli remains the safest Sunday call
Mercedes has the strongest full-season evidence, and Antonelli is now carrying a 45-point lead over Hamilton after Spa.
Ferrari looks like the most natural Budapest challenger because long-corner traction and tire life matter more here than straight-line efficiency.
Hamilton gets the nod over the rest of the pack because Ferrari's race pace has been more convincing than McLaren's lately, and he just added another strong Sunday at Spa.

Track position matters more again
Unlike Spa, Budapest does not hand out easy recovery drives. If Antonelli or Ferrari lock out the first row, that may decide half the race before lap one even starts.
Ferrari has the clearest route to upsetting Mercedes
Ferrari did not have the top-end package to beat Antonelli in Belgium, but Hungary shifts the emphasis toward rotation, tire management and rhythm through slower corners. That is a better fight for Leclerc and Hamilton.
No official grid-penalty story yet
As of Sunday evening, 19 July 2026, there are no official grid penalties published for Budapest. That keeps the baseline read simpler than Spa and puts more weight on outright pace.
